SEO tip number 1: Title-tags
This is part 1 of 5 SEO-tips which should help you getting higher ranks in SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages)
The allmighty Title-tags
One of the most important aspects in SEO is the Title-tag (offcourse, along with the keywords in your content). From my experience I can say that optimizing your title-tags can improve your website ranking significant.
A title tag is found very important by search engines. So it is important that it contains your most important keywords, a brief description of the page and often your company name. Besides that, a title informs your (potential) visitors about the page; what does it cover? is it what i’m looking for? will it answer my question?
The first part: keyword optimization
Say you want a better ranking for the keyword webdesign, because your company is good at it! Beside that keyword you want to target for a couple other keywords: hosting and domains.
A good start could be: Affordable webdesign, hosting and domains at <yourcompanyname>.
This title covers your 3 targeted keywords (also known as terms) and displays your company name. Offcourse, better titles can be thought of, but let’s keep it this way.
Why don’t we mention the company name first?
Your potential visitors perhaps don’t know you? Or they might not be interested in the company behind all this; they just want answers to their questions (i.e. where can I find good, cheap hosting).
Differtent pages, different titles
A common mistake is to make 1 title for all pages in website, even if those pages cover a complete different subject. This makes your title less strong and often doesn’t improve rankings. So keep in mind to give different pages a different title.
Not only for ranking, but also to get visitors
Page titles are the first thing people see when coming from a search engine. The second thing they see is a small excerpt, a meta-description. If your page doesn’t have a meta-description, the search engine will grab a small excerpt from the page. This might result in a description like this:
Contact us for your web design needs: webmaster@website.com … prestigious offices in Syria specialized in architectural, interior and graphic design …
What you see here is a couple of very small excerpts grabbed by the search engine, where it found the keyword you were searching for. It’s better to have a description like this:
Professional web design, web development, web promotion and web hosting in South Africa. Domain registration and custom web solutions.
Summary
Now you know why and how to use your title-tag, along with a description. Only this title-tag can improve rankings great.
In the next chapter I’ll cover common html-tags like <strong>, <h1> to <h4> and <a>.
